Having just started riding, this is something that is often on my mind when on the bike – I find engine braking more than enough to control my
speed but do find that unless I show a brake light then cars can be up my backside very quickly.

Is it a good idea to tap the back brake a few times lightly to demonstrate to those behind you that you are slowing down?

Spot on – I think of it as giving a signal to other road users who may not be awake, or aware how much engine braking a bike has. Controlling your speed by
"acceleration sense" is the ideal, as it doesn't unbalance the bike as much, but don't stay off the brakes if you need them!
